Wikipedia Blacks Out in Protest for SOPA

in less than 4hrs, the english wikipedia will be blacked out globally in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

"Today, the Wikipedia community announced its decision to black out the English-language Wikipedia for 24 hours, worldwide, beginning at 05:00 UTC on Wednesday, January 18 (you can read the statement from the Wikimedia Foundation here). The blackout is a protest against proposed legislation in the United States – the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate – that, if passed, would seriously damage the free and open Internet, including Wikipedia."

a post from an unofficial UPCAT (UP College Admissions Test) Facebook page by its administrators triggered an online uproar from UST students after the latter's admins made a comment about the difficulty of UST's own entrance exams.

on jan8 this post regarding University of Sto. Tomas (UST)'s admission exams was posted, "Lumabas na pala ang results ng USTET (UST Entrance Test), walang thrill kasi madali lang naman nun. Last week pa ng February ang results ng UPCAT – walang kasing hirap kaya sulit ang paghihintay! ;)"

this caught the angst of UST students and hence followed the online tussle between UST and UP, it even trended on Twitter. the admins have long asked for apology.

"Humihingi po kami ng paumanhin sa kung anuman po ang aming nasabi sa page na ito. Hindi naman po namin intensyong makasakit ng iba o ng kung anu pa man at alam po namin na nasa amin po ang pagkakamali dahil hindi namin inisip ng mabuti ang kakalabasan ng mga salitang aming binitiwan. Sa huli ay buong puso po kaming humihingi ng paumanhin sa lahat."

the Philippine's Department of Tourism's newly released slogan, "It's more fun in the Philippines" immediately caught fire in the Twitterverse, allowing PINOYs to post photos of the country as their status updates and a collage of images is shown via It's More fun in the Philippines Pics website (www.itsmorefuninthephilippinespics.com)

a "weekend project" by Arnold Gamboa, the website fetches the posted photos on Twitter and creates a collage of images.

the process is simple - open your Twitter account, post a picture on your timeline with the hashtag #ItsMoreFunInThePhilippines, then this will be posted as part of the collage on the website (note that the hashstag is important and the website refreshes every 5mins)

Google People Finder for Sendong Victims

Philippines is reeling with the devastation left by typhoon Sendong to Cagayan de Oro (CDO), Google is helping as they setup a Typhoon Sendong Crisis Map and a Personal Finder tool to locate missing PINOYs in the flooded communities.

to search information regarding a person, one only needs to enter a name in the tool and it will provide information based on records in database. the tool was tracking 200 records of people as of monday afternoon.

as of posting, the death toll from Sendong had reached over 900, over 500 are still missing according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Philippines "Greener Pasture" for IT Pinoys!

good news for IT PINOYs in the country, Gina Duminy, president of ITProsAsia.com claims that “The greener pastures they are looking for are actually here (Philippines).”

“All the jobs are now here… Salaries (and) packages have become very competitive. I don’t see any reason why kids should still leave the country and find work abroad,” said Duminy.

here are some numbers to back up this claim based on the CBS Interactive data;

an IT manager with less than 5yrs of experience makes an average of P270,922/year (P22,577/month)
project manager gets P334,854 (P27,905/month)
systems development (P282,375/year)
communications (P241,459/year)
support (P197,453/year)
administration (P286,143/year)
while entry-level call center agents in the Philippines make more than their counterparts in India, bringing home US$300 instead of US$250.

*the figures are rising incrementally according to experience

this comes @ a time where the other developed countries try to tighten their belts, and with the high cost of living abroad, it seems the best place to be at is no where else, but home. :)

PILIPINAS.IT Review: Amazon Kindle Fire

i finally got hold of my Amazon Kindle Fire, so far i'm lovin' it!

announced last sept-28-2011, the tech-world having seen many tablets so far but none that could equal that of Apple's iPad, Amazon Kindle Fire has been one of the highly-anticipated tablets lately.

i ordered via amazon.com around mid-october. since i didn't know then how to ship it to Manila, i had it delivered to my folks in the USA instead. eventually i chose Johnny Air Cargo due to their good reviews. the contact persons were in fact prompt and nice, believe me - completely no hassle! picked up my Amazon Kindle Fire (KF) @ their makati office 4-5days after transacting with them.

upon opening...

- at first look, KF is sleek and sturdy. for it's size it was however heavy (almost 4lbs/near-half kilo), good thing i ordered the cover with stand

- the box includes only the KF and a charger

- did not include micro-usb cable (last i checked CDR King doesn't have it :()

- did not include users manual (booklet), but this has been pre-loaded in the KF as a digital document and can be accessed on the Amazon Kindle Help page

upon starting...

- i had to triple check first if i could plug it to our local power outlet, it works for 100-250v (whew!)

- note that you need to first register your KF with Amazon (hence you need wifi connection)

- KF uses Android 2.3 and does not come with some old Android features

- it had this lone power button @ the bottom, which you might accidentally press and shut down the KF

- does not have a Home or Volume buttons, i can live with this since my iPhone's usual problem were these buttons

during play time...

- first checked the highly-touted "Silk" browser, yep it was fast and could almost instantly load all the page contents. much faster than apple's safari (and probably even faster than opera)... and oh yes - flash works!

- the "carousel" shows your recently opened apps/docs/movies/etc, but be careful as this could be a little messy since you can not readily remove them from the list (unless you clear your cache)

- tilting the device (portrait to landscape or vice-versa) is not as smooth transition as that of Apple's ipad/phone.

- zooming in/out is much smoother with Apple ipad/phone as well, also sometimes tapping to zoom in does not always work the first time

- lacks simple preloaded apps such as calendar, calculator - but can be downloaded

- video play is fantastic! sound is crisp and clear (way better than Apple)

- downloading ebooks from Amazon was fast! very fast! although reading it produces little glare on the screen against the light, unlike in the old Kindle

- the big issue... Amazon AppStore (and Amazon Cloud Player) are not available outside the USA. Android Appstore also would not allow you to buy if you don't have a billing address in the USA...

- without the above geographical restrictions, your Amazon Premium account is also somehow useless, note premium accounts have access to free apps of the day, free movies, free mags, free books, etc.. this sucks big time!

- however, there are many options to download apps, e.g. GetJar and SlideMe (note that to be able to download apps outside the AppStore, you need to "allow installation of applications from unknown sources" first) or download and use a micro-usb cable to transfer from your PC to the KF

- another option suggested was to access the AppStore via a proxy server or VPN (still reviewing this though)

for US$199 (Php8800) + US$40 shipment, Amazon Kindle Fire is a great buy for a tablet...certainly not an Apple iPad killer, but perhaps definitely a readers tablet. i can say i'm already a proud PINOY Kindle Fire user!

Fil-Am Blogger, One of NASA's Youngest Engineers

NASA recently launched their biggest and best-equipped robot ever sent to explore another planet, Mars Curiosity (or Mars Science Laboratory) is expected to reach Mars by August 2012, and among those who have worked on the project is a PINOY-American blogger, Gregory G. Villar III.

an honored Physics major who graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in 2009 and applying to Astronomy graduate school to pursue his PhD, Gregory @ 24 is one of the youngest engineers in NASA.

when asked how he got in, he spent 2yrs interning with 3 education programs @ the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). he added, "As with any job, it’s not really your background, it’s how smart you are and how well you adapt or how fast you can learn on the job... So long as they see that you’re very motivated and smart, they’ll take you on for the job.”

When not working, Gregory also blogs via the 100 Words of Physics, where he discusses "his world" in understandable layman’s term. he invites everyone, “Time Travel. Black Holes. Quantum Mechanics. Follow me as I explain cool physics that ANYONE can understand in 100 words.”

Philippine Blog Awards 2011

IT PINOY was a finalist in the recently concluded Philippine Blog Awards (Technology Category National Level), although another blog took home the prize, it was still a light, fun, inspiring, and eventful gathering.

thanks again the Phils. Blog Awards committee, seeing all the other bloggers last night encourages me to do better with blogging.

this could have been my "over-extended / melodramatic" acceptance speech if i had won haha :P

"I've always wanted to be a writer but when my college application in Mass Communication got rejected, sadly I had to immediately shift to BS Computer Science - where the pasture was said to be greener. (well it is! :)) In my 15yrs in the Information Technology, my longing to write somehow did not fade away. And when an opportunities came to write for our corporate paper, I did not hesitate doing it on the side, while coding Java or C++. Then it dawned to me, perhaps I could do both!

See, even before blogging came, I was actually one of those who spam inboxes with daily cheesy anecdotes. And when I wrote my first personal blog 7yrs ago, I just felt - free. I started IT PINOY (or now PILIPINAS.IT) three years ago as a venue to share what I know to the rest of the PINOYs. I wanted the world to know that PINOYs got "IT" too! It is also my way of giving back to the industry who have been good to me.

You know, each day gives us an opportunity to learn and to share what we can, Im glad I am able to do both. Aside from social networks, I earnestly believe that there is power in blogging.

A fellow blogger once said, 'game changing innovations are few and far between.. they are usually simple concepts to describe but when they arrive, it takes time to fully realize their importance and impact. television was a game-changer, mobile devices were a game-changer, and blogging is also one.' randomly browsing the web today... i clicked on one of my followed twitter technology profiles.. it brought me to The Philippine Blog Awards site. i remembered, "wait i did enroll my blog a few months back, wouldn't do harm if i checked, right?" told myself.

already forgotten my category, i browsed through the pages, "well it's got to be in the technology category," told my self.

there was quite a number of blogs on the list, i reviewed everyone thinking, "why the heck did this blog get in (the list), while mine didn't?" sour-graping here hehe :P

and just when all hope was lost and resolutely telling myself, "you just got to do better."

then there it is, the very last line says, "IT PINOY (itpinoy.blogspot.com)!"

shocked, i checked. wait PILIPINAS.IT and IT PINOY is one and the same..i just couldn't believe it! :P

on nov21, a photo was uploaded by Red Silva (Reddy JS) to Facebook - it was of a woman searching the streets of manila for her missing husband.

"I saw this old woman sitting by herself yesterday at the corner of buendia and roxas blvd yesterday. Surprised to see a bond paper pinned in front and back of her dress with a picture of a missing old man, i asked her about it and she said it is her husband who has been missing for two weeks now. I was touched by her integrity and pained to see her looking for him in that manner so i decided to help her too. a historic coming together of the top Philippine TV network honchos became the highlight of the 22nd Philippine Advertising Congress (AdCon22), who's battlecry this year is "Change the Game."

Atty. Felipe "Henry" Gozon of GMA 7, Manuel "Manny" Pangilinan of TV5, and Eugenio "Gabby" Lopez III talked about their network's successes and succeeding plans and how they see technology to redefine the media landscape.

Here are some key notes of their speeches:

"..the future of television may still prove to be a source of human connection and human communication...like pacquiao.. television is @ a crossroads.. to reinvent itself..."

Atty. Gozon believes that television is still and remains the cheapest form of entertainment. tv sets however need to evolve alongside the ever changing digital technology. while social network and search sites became billion-dollar game changers, it is but replete that content can now be controlled by consumers who have more mediums to access them - via tv, computer and mobile devices. (note: 36% of ages 16-60 accesses internet daily).

he gave "7 fearless forecast" - tv remains the medium to beat, tv will remain critical to brand loyalty, digital technology will go mobile, consumers taste will be driven by tv, viewer engagement will be more dynamic, demand for tv remains high, and tv will remain the source for human connection and communication.

he closed his speech with GMA 7's promise to continue harnessing new technology, to listen and understand consumer psychie, and to empower them through information and "serbisyong totoo."

"the digital tsunami is coming, join me in greeting it, 'd2 na me.'"

MVP's entry was accompanied with REM's "It's the end of the world." he gave a short narrative of how a youth today uses technology.

christine, a young city girl awakens and posts a Facebook status, "I got a feeling, tonight's gonna be a good night!" her friends knew its directed to someone, they "like" her status nonetheless. while her dad reads news on inquirer, cristine has read it already on Twitter and Facebook. going to work via MRT, she listens to her iPod playlist running Black Eyed Peas. shortly after arriving work, she checks into Foursquare while still waiting for her boyfriend - marco to comment (or even like) her status. she then spends 8hrs of her day @ a cubicle with her smart netphone. still no feedback from marco, probably busy with "call of duty 3," cristine finds a trailer of the latest film and shares it in Facebook, marco sees it, likes it, and texted her "excited. c u ltr."

this is christine - the past, present and the future. this is the goal of TV5.

internet, according to MVP, is a true medium for the masses changing the way we think and consume content, shaping and defining the christines of today.

he shared that his other companies, Smart and PLDT would soon utilize the Cloud, hence the end of roaming. urging everyone, to "go and sim no more."

he believes TV stations would still dominate especially with DTTV (Digital Terrestrial Television). like Amazon and Netflix, MVP believes content producers would be further empowered, advertisers would adjust to future media following geo-location, thus content and ads matches people's interests.

"the future of media would be shaped by the people's needs, which @ its core is - emotional."

Gabby started giving a glimpse of the next AdConn, that they would soon be talking of media not yet viable today. and as their company celebrates its 60th year, they would still follow the same guiding light - "in the service of the filipino worldwide."

he emphasizes that "technology will change everything, except the human nature who craves for recognition, affirmation, connection and inspiration to be the best they can be for self fulfillment, for family, and for community."

there were various tech venture successes he mentioned, such as the Imortal webisodes earning over 15M views, ABS-CBNNews IOS app (which became the most downloaded app when released), and their partnership with Youtube and Google, which recently brought Philippine President PNoy to the Youtube Worldview.

he gave some glimpses of their company's next plans such as venturing to Digital Terrestrial Television (DTTV) and IPTV hoping to reach the greater mass.

Gabby added, "more than obsessing of connecting gadgets to gadgets, we will continue leveraging our ability to connect to the heart..even in this age of gadgets, we believe the right buttons to press are those in the hearts of the people, the true connections of longings and passion, would be the best edge in the age of clutter and thousands of choices.. technology only follows where the human spirit wants to go."

he ended his speech with, "i've been in this industry for 25yrs, but this is all i ever wanted to do, its all i ever going to do... i believe its an honor and a privilege to work for a company that puts public service at the center, its reason for being.. working at abs-cbn is not a job, its a calling."

in summary, MVP's speech has the most wit and most applauded probably because he captured how the youth today uses technology. Atty. Gozon's speech was clear with their goal to remain number 1 and to be in tune with technology (but somehow lacks tech details how to achieve it). Gabby's talk of their tech successes proves how they continue to value technology (it was also sentimental and quite melodramatic - but PINOYs love this!)

anyway, it was nice to hear their plans with regards to using current technologies. in the end it is believed that us - consumers, would benefit the most.

CGMA is facing charges for allegedly sabotaging the 2007 national elections, will be under hospital arrest until she is physically able to move to the Southern Police District detention center where she will be placed under custody. this also bars her from leaving the country, which has been the top news lately.

Msgr. Jose Clemente Ignacio stated the the live streaming service (via www.ustream.tv) was initiated following numerous requests from Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and devotees, who want to hear Mass but could not do so because of their circumstances.

the 22yr old co-founder of Diaspora (https://diasp.org), Ilya Zhitomirskiy has passed away over the weekend. the san francisco local media says that suicide might have been the cause of the young technopreneur's death (although this still needs to be confirmed after a few weeks).

it is noted the Ilya was one of four US college students who launched Diaspora last year in a bid to win fans as an easier, more private alternative to social networking powerhouse Facebook.

the boxing world stopped again as eight-division champion, Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao retains his WBO World Welterweight belt winning a majority decision against arch-nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez.

as with the past 2 fights, the "Last Stand" took 12 rounds, with the PINOY-pride "controversially" edging the mexican on points.

the fight drew mixed reactions from the boxing community, with many thinking the mexican won, but coach Freddie Roach on his twitter account posted a photo of the punchstats showing Pacquiao throwing 176 punches compared to Marquez' 138.

The London Conference on Cyberspace - To Set "Rules of the Road"

The London Conference on Cyberspace, is scheduled to host a total of 60 nations to discuss the rising cyber security attacks and urges a "global co-ordinated response" against these crimes, which has been estimated to cost £600Bil (or $958Bil) a year worldwide.

the 2-day conference aims to set an international "rules of the road' and establish "norms of acceptable behaviour" in cyberspace. invited were tech entrepreneurs such as from Wikipedia, Cisco and Facebook as well as representatives from China and Russia, two countries tagged as the "worst culprits in cyber-attacks."

"How to ensure we can all reap the benefits of a safe and secure cyberspace for generations to come is one of the greatest challenges we face... This needs to be a collective endeavour, involving all those who have a stake in cyberspace," said Foreign Secretary William Hague.

"The ideas and proposals we hope to emerge from the conference will develop into the 'London Agenda' - an inclusive and focused approach to help us realise the enormous potential cyberspace offers for a more prosperous, safe and open networked world," Hague added.

Steve Jobs' Legacy

the information technology industry mourns today as one of the world's greatest innovators, Steve Jobs finally lost his battle against cancer @ age 56.

the world bit the apple

many, especially the younger PINOY generation probably just remember Steve as the guy holding that Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod. but to the tech world, he was more.

from his humble beginnings in 1976, 16yr-old Steve helped start Apple and created the first personal computer. barely after releasing Macintosh in 1985, Steve was unfortunately fired where he later claimed,

"The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life."

following that year he started NeXt Computer and bought Lucas Films' Pixar. in 1996, Apple bought NeXt and Steve rejoins the company he built. in 2001 the first iPod came out. by 2007, Apple ventured on mobile devices hence the birth of iPhones. the first iPad arrived on 2010.

as early as mid-2004, Steve has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his pancreas, he later on recovered from this. on january 2011 he officially filed a medical leave of absence and in august 2011, he resigned as the CEO of Apple.

much has been said about Steve's aggressive and temperamental management style, but one thing is for sure, Steve always aspired to position Apple and its products @ the forefront of information technology industry by foreseeing and setting trends, at least in innovation and style.

"There's an old Wayne Gretzky quote that I love. 'I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.' And we've always tried to do that at Apple. Since the very very beginning. And we always will." Steve said.

if you ask what might be his legacy to all of us, it's not really the machines and gadgets that he and Apple developed. watch this powerful speech he gave to the graduating Stanford students in 2005 and know for yourself how we, like him could -

unlike the past Apple events, this latest gathering was somehow below expectations. everybody was looking for an iPhone 5, and with a new management @ the helm (CEO Tim Cook), many were expecting Apple will continue to surprise us.

the saving grace probably of this new iPhone version is its new feature, Siri - voice activated, it gives you reminders, even takes dictation, helps you quickly find places, it claims to understand what you mean as it provides you your needed information. basically as Apple put it, Siri allows you to converse with your iPhone :)

DPWH 'Overeager' Employee Suspended Over Fake Photos

Philippines witnessed two consecutive strong typhoons lately, and the Pedring aftermath has shown its devastation proven by the ravaged Manila Bay. it seems the story didn't end there as the government on Monday suspended the "overeager" employee who posted a photoshopped image of high officials "inspecting" the baywalk.

"We should go to Internet voting. Mailing ano pa yan eh. let's go international through internet voting," Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez said as he also showed a report that only 300k of the 9mil PINOY overseas are registered, of which only about 200k actually voted.

fil-am lawyer and businesswoman Loida Nicolas-Lewis presented her research on how other countries allowed expatriates the right to vote, which increased voter turnout as proven in Dominican Republic and Spain.

PINOY Facebook users might have been surprised today with the latest tweaks in their profiles, as Facebook launches new ways for users to manage their content such as news feeds, top stories, and recent updates.

news feed changes are now in one place - recent and top stories have been highlighted and are now placed at the top of the tab with blue corners (which reminds us of Twitter's Top tweets).

each post can be ticked as a top story by clicking on the top left corner. ticking such news would later affect what new stories, which could be your interest. these top stories are based on many factors, which includes your relationship to the person, how many comments and likes it got, and what type of story it is, etc.

you can filter feeds from friends by hiding stories from people, group, event or app, you aren't really interested or just "unsubscribe."

aside from friend (or page) posts you follow, you’ll see photo tags, friend requests, event updates, group memberships and other activity.

James Soriano's “Language, learning, identity, privilege” article on Manila Bulletin recently became the most talked about topic by PINOYs and netizens alike. the article gained mixed criticisms from everyone, even caught the eye of an IT person.

Evolution of Programming Languages

choosing not to dwell and add insult to what James' wrote, Brainless Entertainment's Arielle B. Cruz in reply wrote "Hindi Ingles and Wika ng mga Filipinong Marunong" (translated, "English is not the Language of Intelligent Filipinos") and chose to highlight his own daily work dealings, which allowed him to excel and be recognized in his own field - using the Filipino language.

"Ang sa akin lang: kung ang batayan ni Soriano ay ang kaniyang mga karanasan sa pakikipaghalubilo sa mga dalubhasa, sana ay naisip din muna niya na may ibang karanasan ang ibang tao sa ganoong bagay, bago siya sumulat ng isang artikulong pawang pangkalahatan," (roughly translates to - Soriano shouldn't have generalized his concept of intelligence based on his own experience alone since all of us have our own experiences as well), said Arielle.

he later on added, "Kamakailan lang, bumisita ako sa isang security expert... Napakasensitibo ng sistemang ito kaya't kinailangan naming makapanayam pa ang ibang eksperto. Lahat ng pag-uusap namin ay sa wikang Filipino."

what PILIPINAS.IT sees in Arielle's article is that english alone is not needed to deal with intelligent people to discuss intelligent matters, nor would measure your intelligence. in Arielle's case, they spoke Filipino, because this is probably where they feel most comfortable with while expressing theirs thoughts and ideas.

Arielle's clincher was this last statement, "Para sa akin, ang wika ng mga taong talagang marunong ay Python." (for me, the true language of intelligent people is Python)

for the non-IT PINOYs, Python is a computer programming language.

New York Times published select audio recordings from the Federal Aviation Administration (F.A.A.), North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) and American Airlines from the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. The recordings, some of which have been published previously, are being released in a multimedia report originally intended to be part of the Sept. 11 Commission’s 2004 report.

Facebook just started rolling 'Smart Lists' to select users, which intelligently group certain set of friends into lists (mimicking Google+'s Circle) and there have been recent reports of spamvertised 'Facebook notifications' leading to malware, thought these infos would come handy especially since Philippines now ranks 8th in the world with the most number of Facebook users.

Checkfacebook.com shows that as of September 10, 2011, Philippines has 26,249,780 users, ranking 8th in the world, with the USA topping the list with over 150Mil users.

the report also shows that around 52% of these users are PINAYs. 38.6% of this are 18-24yrs old, 25.3% -> 24-34, 18.3% -> 14-17, 10% -> 35-44, aged 65+ takes around 1%, and <13yrs old takes 1.4%.

'Back to the Future' Nike Mag Available Now on eBay

to all PINOYs who have idolized Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) from the movie "Back to the Future Part II" might have longed to have that Nike Mag shoe, well good news the shoes is now for real and will be available on nikemag.eBay.com.

the self-lacing feature depicted in the 1989 movie is gone, but the MAG will get the movie version's LED-electroluminescent glowing Nike logos.

Nike has produced a limited run of 1,500 pairs of the MAG. Each will be auctioned on EBay at nikemag.eBay.com, and all of the "net proceeds" will go to the Michael J. Recovery from 9/11 as an IT/Person

in time for the 10th year commemoration of the 9/11 attack of the World Trade Center, here's a very nice write-up of an person who lived to tell his story and how as both an IT professional and as a family man recovered from the great ordeal.

Bob Eisenhardt was part of an IT team for Aon Group (a global insurance company) located on the 99th-105th floors of the South Tower on 9/11.

"Since this is an IT site (referring to TechRepublic), I will talk about the loss of and recovery of data in the immediate aftermath of the crashes. But I have to stress that, as it is with any disaster scenario, people are the most precious commodity," Bob emphasized.

"It’s important that your staff know that in evacuations they should not worry about computers, data, retrieving their personal effects from their desks, or going back to get their car. I learned this in the worst possible way: Steve Poulos, the system administrator for Aon Risk Services, returned to the 103rd floor to retrieve the Risk Service data tapes. By doing so, he ran out of time and did not survive."

on 9/8-9, Aon Consulting underwent maintenance and hence their data tapes were taken offsite and hence had their back-ups
their company created web bulletins for survivors to post comments, reconnect family members, and for mourners to express their condolences
with their backups safe and their data tapes setup on a different data center, although still traumatic and mourning, within hours work has resumed

Apple Accused of Impersonating Police Over Missing iPhone 5 Prototype

PINOYs on iPhone are all excited for the iPhone 5, bet you're aware that the latest prototype got lost (yup Apple lost another iPhone :)), well here's more juice to this story - there were reports that those who visited and did an investigation of the man who purportedly got the latest prototype, weren't police @ all!

on aug31, CNET reported that Apple yet again, lost another prototype of its iPhone. the latest being iPhone 5 went missing in a bar in San Francisco and was traced via GPS to a 22yrs old, Sergio Calderon.

“They threatened me,” Sergio Calderon said and they searched his house yet they found nothing. “We don’t know anything about it, still, to this day... They made it seem like they were on the phone with the owner of the phone, and they said ‘The person’s not pressing charges, they just want it back. They’ll give you $300,” he added.

UPDATE: The San Francisco Police Department has now confirmed to SFWeekly that it did in fact assist Apple security with the search. An update can be found [bgr.com]
